Fishing tournaments like "Pez Vela" bring excitement, challenge, and the chance to test skills against some of the best anglers. In 2005, two men took on the offshore waters of Mazatlán, Mexico, with Starfleet Fishing Charters and secured an impressive third place by landing a winning Dorado. Their story highlights the thrill of tournament fishing, the beauty of Mazatlán’s waters, and the expertise of Starfleet Fishing Charters.

Setting the Scene: Mazatlán and Starfleet Fishing Charters

Mazatlán is known for its rich marine life and excellent fishing conditions. Offshore tournaments here attract anglers from around the world, eager to catch prized species like dorado, marlin, and tuna. Starfleet Fishing Charters offers experienced guides, well-equipped boats, and local knowledge that make it a top choice for tournament participants.

Their plan was simple: use Starfleet’s expertise and 40' Luhrs to find the best fishing spots and bring home a winning catch.

The Bel Mar

The Bel Mar Hotel, located in the picturesque city of Mazatlan, Mexico, has a rich history that dates back several decades. Originally opened in the mid-20th century, the hotel quickly became a popular destination for both tourists and locals, thanks to its prime beachfront location and charming architecture.

One of the most notable aspects of The Bel Mar Hotel's history is its connection to Hollywood legend John Wayne. The iconic actor was known to frequent Mazatlan during his visits to Mexico, often staying at The Bel Mar. His presence at the hotel contributed to its allure, attracting fans and admirers who hoped to catch a glimpse of the star. Wayne's visits to Mazatlan were primarily associated with his love for fishing and the vibrant culture of the region. The hotel served as a perfect base for him to explore the surrounding areas, enjoy the local cuisine, and partake in fishing expeditions. Imagine the two when they realized they were staying in "John Wayne's room".

Pueblo Bonito at Emerald Bay

Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay is a luxurious resort located in Mazatlán, Mexico. Nestled along the beautiful Pacific coastline, the resort offers stunning ocean views and a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation and enjoyment. The two decided this was the "spot" and relaxed in the comfort of the bar that housed some of the most magnificant animal mounts one could ever see.

The Tournament Begins: Strategy and Preparation

Strategy, patience, and teamwork is the best attitude to exit port with. The men worked closely with their captain and crew to identify promising areas offshore. In 2005, marine GPS was "turning the corner", soon to be equipped on every offshore boat in existence. But today, a Garmin "handheld grey screen" along with "PVC pipe outriggers" made this trip one that would never be forgotten.

You have not really experienced the thrill of offshore fishing until you see the flare. The "feel" of a "shotgun start" as our captain was "all ahead full" to the small outlet entering the pacific. The sound of numerous boats "jockeying for position" as the "turbos whine" on each one trying to beat the other out of the harbor.

The Thrill of the Catch: Landing the Winning Dorado

After several hours the reel started "singing" in a "tugging sound" that only a Dorado can make a reel do. The battle began. The dorado fought hard, leaping and darting through the water. The anglers landed the fish with no problem.

When the dorado finally reached the boat, it was clear they had a prize catch. The fish’s vibrant colors and size impressed everyone on board. This catch would be it, maybe..

The Weigh-In

The tournament weigh-in later that day was something to close to unbelievable. The two men’s dorado earned them third place, a remarkable achievement given the competition. As the tournament directors were shufflimg the two around the marina, the usual "euphoric feeling" came to both as they knew they had pulled it off.

They found themselves surrounded by "Modelo Girls" eager to hang out and pass "free beer" to them. Both could get by in Mexico with their "muy mal espanol" and previous tournament experience, but this environment proved to be somewhat more challenging as the two looked at each other and both thought "I have no idea what is going on." They were signaled to come this way as the award ceremony took place. "Spanish beyond their realm of understanding started", and when their "team name" was called, the crowd became full of "enjoying laughter" as they realized the play on insults the two had concocted.

The two were expecting a "small weigh in" with maybe a little press for a good cause. As it turned out, the crowd consisted of what seemed like "half the town".

The Trophy

The story of these two men and their winning dorado captures the essence of offshore tournament fishing: challenge, excitement, and reward. Their third place finish is a testament to their skill. The "living proof" of their week lies somewhere in a Houston restaurant. The winnings, well, that never made it out of the country....
